BEGINNING SPINNING CLASS FRIDAY AND SATURDAY Tentatively scheduled for May 2008. Spinning can be relaxing and creative, giving you the opportunity to create one-of-a-kind yarns, or the ability to duplicate commercial yarns. The class includes instruction on identifying wool grades from various breeds of sheep; what projects work best with different breeds' wool; how to wash and card your fiber and prepare it for spinning, places to send fleeces for processing if you don't want to prepare your own or buy prepared fibers, how to spin the type of yarn you want from batts, roving, and top. On the second day of class, your spinning will be critiqued, and suggestions made for improvement. You will learn how to ply, how to wash skeins, what equipment is essential (and what is not) for spinning, and you also will get to try a variety of new wheels. The class will get you started so that you have a background in controlling the yarns that you make. If you have your own wheel and wish to use it, it must be in working condition before the class starts. If it needs any repairs or adjustments, they will need to be made prior to the first day of class. If your wheel is not in good working condition as determined by the instructor, please be prepared to rent a wheel. For those of you who do not have a working wheel, new wheels will be available to rent for $25 during class hours; the rental fee can be applied in full to the purchase of any new wheel in stock. Supplies include ready to spin, natural colored wool and the book, Hands On Spinning. Please do not bring your own fiber into the shop. Class hours: Friday, 10 - 4:30; Saturday, 10 - 3. Class fee: $100. Materials fee: $50. Advance deposit: $100 due by TBD. Instructor, Kathi Cascio. TO REGISTER: See the instructions in the blue box at the bottom of this page.

About our Instructors:
Rosie Dittman:
Rosie has been working in fiber for approximately 25 years, including knitting, spinning, weaving and most recently, felting. She has studied felting with Chad Hagen, Heather Turner at New Zealand Wool Festival, and Russian felter Alexander Pilan at Taos wool Festival. "The flexibility and creativity that felting allows is very exciting to me, and I usually incorporate primitive, wet and needle felting into one piece, as well as other fiber techniques such as weaving and handspun yarns."
Rosie's work has been included in Spin Off magazine and Interweave Press publications and she is currently writing a book "Handspun, Handwoven Scarves" as a tribute to sheep breeders in our area. She is a member of 2nd Street Gallery in Algoma, WI and has work displayed in various shops in Door County, Wisconsin, including Apple Hollow Fiber Arts.
Carol Morgan:
Carol Morgan began showing her handmade paper art in 1998. Carol earned a doctorate from the University of Wisconsin and is a counselor in private practice in Sturgeon Bay. Carol is primarily a self-taught artist. Her artwork is influenced by the healing and creative process as well as by nature. She has taken classes from Giesela Moyer at Sievers School of Fiber Arts, Washington Island, Wisconsin. More recently she studied Asian and Western papermaking at the University of Iowa-Iowa City, with Tim Barrett and Lynn Amilie. She has received a grant from the Indiana Arts Council that funded “Spirit Women Retreat” installation, created a display and wrote a book about the healing process, received awards and commissions in Indiana and Wisconsin. Her current work, “The Red Leaf” series, can be seen at the 2nd Street Gallery, Algoma Wisconsin and her playful artwork is occasionally displayed at Apple Hollow Fiber Arts.
Kathi Cascio:
I studied fine arts at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (many years ago) but detoured into a quality assurance career in state-of-the-art electronics manufacturing, working in that industry for approximately 20 years in California and Wisconsin. I began raising sheep in 1984, quit my career to work part-time in my family's mail order musical instrument business, and devoted my spare time to learning fiber arts pursuits and raising sheep. My business, Apple Hollow Fiber Arts, developed in the early 1990s, at first by restoring and selling antique spinning wheels and weaving looms. Soon after that, I began teaching and selling supplies and new wheels and looms, and in 1996 began selling used equipment on the internet as a sideline to the on-the-farm shop. My website, www.applehollow.com, went online in 1998 as a full-time mail order business. Over the years, the business has progressed from an 'internet warehouse' and small on-the-farm shop to a retail 'downtown' fiber shop with and 2 (and a half) full time employees; we retain the internet mail order business as well. My primary area interest of fiber arts study for the last few years has been the use of color interaction in knitting, spinning and weaving. I love working with fiber arts equipment and teaching is a natural outgrowth of that interest.
Deposits are refundable ONLY if class is cancelled by Apple Hollow. Class fees will be assessed for each attendee. Classes are designed for adult participation only. We are sorry, but we have no facilities for child care. And, please leave your dogs at home.
